The college of Metallurgy and Energy originated from Beiyang University of the old China. In 1959 in the course of nationwide readjustment of departments, the Department of Mining Industry of the present Tianjin University (originally Beiyang University ) was merged into our university and has grown into the college of today with the longest history among all the colleges of Hebei Polytechnic University . Through the efforts of several generations, the college has now:

The college also enrolls doctoral candidates in the name of North East University and Yangshan University . Metallurgical Engineering is one of the provincial key specialties. The Metallurgy Lab is one of the key labs at both provincial and municipal levels. The postgraduate program is an excellent program of Hebei Province.

The college consists of 3 departments, Metallurgical Experiment Center, Hebei Polytechnic University Tangshan Digital Instrument Factory, and the Institute of Environment Protection and Energy Saving.

It has a staff of 52, including 18 professors, 2 doctoral tutors, 20 master tutors, 24 associate professors, and 22 out of the 52 teachers hold doctor's degree. Yin Ruiyu, the former deputy director of the Metallurgical Ministry, academician of China Academy of Engineering, is employed as privileged professor by the college. Academician Lu Zhongwu and 5 members of the State Discipline Appraisal Team are employed as part-time professors.

Modern Metallurgical Technology Lab of Hebei Province ---A Provincial Key Lab

Under the leadership and strong support of the CPC committee and administration of the university, the College of Metallurgy and Energy has developed into a research and development center with serial sets of experiment and research equipment, which is closely linked with and meets the need of the development of metallurgical industry in Hebei Province and the whole country. With a possession of RMB 13,000,000 yuan worth of 307 sets of instruments, including 31 sets at the price of over RMB 50,000 yuan, covering an area of 2200, the lab fits the development of metallurgy and energy industries in our city and the province with advanced conditions to shoulder large-scale projects of technical development and basic research of new-high technology.

Achievements of Teaching and Scientific Research An excellent tradition and working style have been formed in the college's teaching and scientific research fields. This can be seen from the achievements made these years: 2 first provincial prizes, 2 second prizes and 3 third prizes for excellent teaching achievement; 4 provincial excellent courses, and 10 university excellent courses; 10 national and provincial projects of tackling key scientific and technological problems and natural fund projects; more than 30 other projects; 1 Provincial Governor Special Award; 3 provincial first prizes, 4 second prizes and 9 third prizes for scientific and technological advance; over 20 municipal prizes for scientific and technological advance; publication of 8 books and over 400 essays (with 60 adopted by the three major indices) on metallurgy and energy; over 30 achievements transformed or transferred to create a total economic profit of more than one billion yuan for enterprises.

Student Administration The college has always been advocating the spirit of 'diligence, advance, truth and efficiency' in student administration to strengthen the students' sense of creativity, enrich their spare-time life, aiming at cultivating high quality graduates with solid professional knowledge, lofty ideals, and kills and abilities to meet the needs of the society. Every year there are many students obtaining honors of different kinds and scholarships. In the national "Challenge Cup" Science and Technology Contest, students of the college won the third prize. For years the employment rate and the number of students passing the postgraduate exams have ranked the first in the university. In the year of 2004, the college was named "Advanced Collective of College Students Administration" by the Education Committee of Hebei Provincial Government and the Education Department of Hebei Province.
